Congratulation to Richard Williams-Bulkeley on his qualification as Solicitor

Congratulations from the Butcher & Barlow team to our newly qualified Solicitor Richard Williams-Bulkeley. Richard commenced his Training Contract with Butcher & Barlow in September 2021 and, within that time, has gained experience within the Corporate & Commercial, Commercial Property, Agricultural and Dispute Resolution departments. Richard will be working in our Corporate & Commercial department on Gadbrook Park, alongside Jonathan Aldersley and Tom Newman.

To get to know a little more about Richard, we sat down with a coffee, made by himself (keep reading to find out why), and had a chat:

Hi Richard and congratulations on your qualification as a Solicitor.

Thank you. I am delighted to be joining Jonathan and Tom in the Corporate & Commercial department. I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in!

Let’s dive straight in with our questions then. Have you always wanted to be a lawyer?

Well, funny you should ask. Before I chose what I wanted to study at university, I had a huge argument with my mother. She said I loved arguing so much that I might as well do it professionally. Two degrees and countless file notes later, here I am.

Are there any interesting cases you have been involved in?

Every corporate matter is interesting to me. If I had to choose one, it’d be a betrayal of all the other ones. Otherwise, I’d say going to a mouldy house in Liverpool to inspect water damage whilst I was doing my litigation seat in early 2023.

Do you have any light hearted anecdotes from your career so far?

Always carry a spare tie in your jacket if going to court with a client in case the client spills coffee down their front. Lifesaver.

We’re sure any client in that situation would be grateful for a spare tie!

What does a typical working day look like for you?

This is always impossible to describe! I can safely say it always starts with a nice cup of filter coffee that I make with an Aeropress coffee maker.

What interests do you have outside of work?

I enjoy finding weird restaurants to try in Manchester and going to enough gigs to get hearing loss. If I can stomach it, I’ll watch a Tottenham Hotspur match.

You will have to keep us updated with any restaurants you think are worth a visit. Let’s have some quick fire questions before we let you get back to your desk.

If you could tell your 15 year old self something, what would it be?

Have more stupid and fun haircuts, because you’ll be stuck with the same one for the rest of your life after you turn 22.

If you could be someone else for the day, who would it be?

Elon Musk, so I could change X back to Twitter. Would also transfer all his cash to myself.

Who do you admire in the business world?

Daniel Levy. Great haircut and ruthless negotiator.

If money was no object, what would you do all day?

I’d be doing something different every single day and be endlessly travelling from place to place.

That sounds like fun. Where would you go and why?

It has to be the Moon. The ultimate view and I’d be one of a tiny group of people to have ever stepped foot on it.

You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?

Maybe white because it is the most hilariously pointless crayon in existence.

Can you tell us an interesting fact about yourself that not many people would know?

I won a regional art prize when I was 8 by accident. My art teacher was so shocked he thought there had been a mistake and queried it with the judging body. They then misspelt my name on the award, devastated.

Before we go, we always like to remind colleagues how you take your tea or coffee?

Please just let me make it. I’m very particular about my coffee, so I’ll stick with my Aeropress coffee maker.

Thank you for taking the time to chat today Richard. All the best for the next stage of your career.
