Our History

John Woodward Barlow and Samuel Foster Butcher founded the Firm in 1887, in Bury, Lancashire, where they played an important role in supporting industrial concerns of the 19th and 20th centuries within Bury and the surrounding areas.

Over the Firm’s impressive nearly 140 year history, Butcher & Barlow has taken over a number of practises to expand its offering.

In 2014, the Firm opened a dedicated Commercial and Agricultural office on Gadbrook Park, Northwich to provide a focused team which can advise and assist on commercial and agricultural matters in a professional, business centred setting.

The following year, Butcher & Barlow extended their head office in Bury, to reunite the family department which had been located elsewhere in the town with the rest of the Bury team .

Butcher & Barlow LLP remains a full-service law firm with big ambitions and in 2021, the Firm completed a full re-brand to reflect their core values and vision for the future.
