Butcher & Barlow Welcomes Vicky Philipson

Last month Butcher & Barlow welcomed solicitor Vicky Philipson to the commercial litigation team at the Gadbrook Park office.  As is now customary we sat down with a cup of tea to find out a little more about the Manchester United fan.

 

Hi Vicky, welcome to the Firm. How are you settling in?

 I have been here for nearly 2 months now and the time has flown by!  The litigation team here at Gadbrook Park are great to work with, and I have already learned a great deal from Alex Sandland who heads up the department.

 

I expect with Litigation, you never quite know what the day is going to throw at you?

 That’s one thing I love about my job –  there is no such thing as a typical working day! But each day starts the same – cup of tea, checking my e-mails, and making a list of what needs to be done that day.

 

We always like to remind colleagues how you take your tea…

Haha! Strong but milky – not many people get it right but please don’t stop trying!

 

What made you want to be a lawyer?

 I was always interested in the law, but when I decided to study law at university I was looking for a career that challenged me intellectually and involved working with people.

 

Gadbrook Park is the Firm’s commercial hub.  What can you bring to the office?

The Gadbrook Park office has grown significantly in the last few years, and offers a range of commercial and agricultural services.  I hope that my addition to the team, and my wide experience in litigation, allows the firm to expand those services even further.

In the next few years I want to build up my own client base and reputation within the firm, so that I can contribute to the already strong but ever growing commercial side of Butcher & Barlow.

 

Any light hearted anecdotes from your career so far?

 I did not pass my driving test until I was 25, and am not known as the best driver.  I was attending a conference with a QC, who had blocked someone in with his Bentley in the car park.  When he handed me the keys and asked me to move it, the look on my supervising partner’s face was priceless.  Needless to say I’ve never been so nervous parking a car!

 

So motorsports isn’t one or your interests then?

 Ha! No, I love football, music and travel.

 

In that case, if you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?

 I’ve always wanted to go to Australia. I have family who live out there, and many friends who have travelled there and have made me very jealous with tales of their adventures!

If you could be someone else for the day, who would it be?

 Beyonce!

 

Who do you admire in the business world?

 Karen Brady – a strong business woman who has made her mark in the male-dominated world of football.

 

You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?

 Definitely the red of Manchester United!

 

I think there could be some friendly football rivalry within your department – lets hope things don’t get too fiery this season!

 

How would your friends describe you?

 Kind, generous and honest.

 

If you could tell your 15 year old self something, what would it be?

 Make the most of every opportunity that comes your way, and don’t let fear hold you back.
