Butcher & Barlow’s Agriculture & Rural Affairs Team at the 2024 Cheshire Ploughing & Hedge Laying Match
After a weekend of relentless rain, we were delighted to wake up to a bright and dry morning for the 98th Annual Cheshire Ploughing & Hedge Laying Match.
The Match, which tours the county and has a different venue each year, was held at Holly Tree Farm in Lower Withington. Situated in the picturesque countryside, and under the shadow of the iconic Lovell Telescope, the event was hosted with the kind permission of the Lea and Venables families.
As one of Cheshire’s much loved agricultural events, this year’s event did not disappoint, showcasing the best of Cheshire’s farming traditions with competitive ploughing and hedge-laying contests. Alongside the competitions, a variety of trade stands provided insight into the latest innovations in agricultural machinery and services for both professionals and anyone with an interest in agriculture and rural affairs.
Butcher & Barlow’s Agriculture & Rural Affairs Team was proud to be part of the event once again joining forces with Chartered Surveyors Meller Speakman , Accountancy firm Bennett Brooks and environmental advisory agency ELM Associates to host our shared stand. It was an excellent opportunity to demonstrate how, together, we offer a holistic approach to supporting the rural community—covering legal, financial, and environmental needs. Our team was on hand all day, providing advice and chatting with visitors about everything from land ownership and business structuring to the environmental challenges facing today’s farmers.
One of the highlights of our stand was the return of Roach’s Roaster, Their delicious hog roast was a huge hit, drawing in visitors from all corners of the showground. Over 150 guests visited our stand throughout the day and it was a pleasure to catch up with many familiar faces, as well as to make new connections. We’re always thrilled to hear your thoughts and experiences, and these conversations are invaluable to us in continuing to offer advice tailored to the unique challenges of the farming community.
The Cheshire Ploughing Match is a long-standing celebration of the region’s rural heritage, and it remains a vital networking opportunity for those involved in agriculture. From machinery demonstrations to traditional craft competitions, the event not only showcases the expertise within the community but also highlights the evolving challenges and opportunities in the sector. As a Firm dedicated to supporting agri-businesses, farmers, and rural landholders, we are keenly aware of the importance of maintaining these traditions while adapting to modern-day needs.
We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who took the time to visit our stand. Your continued engagement and shared experiences allow us to deepen our understanding of the rural community’s needs, and we look forward to working with you in the coming months.
